When someone mentions that they are going camping you might envision this:

However Canadians are increasingly opting for more comfortable options such as a vacation trailer or motorhome. According to the Canadian Recreational Vehicle Association RV wholesale shipments in Canada increased 28.37% in 2017.

Unlike your traditional tent, vacation trailers and motorhomes are not automatically covered under your homeowner’s policy. The type of insurance you need depends on a number of factors including the type of recreational vehicle you have, if you will be parking it a campground or travelling around with it and where you will be travelling.

COVERAGES UNIQUE TO MOTORHOMES & VACATION TRAILERS

Emergency Roadside Assistance

These endorsements will provide some coverage for towing you trailer or motorhome if there is a mechanical breakdown. They also often include battery boosts, changing a flat, lockout and fuel delivery services.

Aviva Insurance even has the option to upgrade this package to include trip planning, trip interruption and pet assistance.

Emergency Vacation Expense

This coverage will help cover some of the extra expense you incur to get home after there has been a loss.

Golf Cart

Some insurers automatically include coverage for damage to a golf cart kept at your campground. The limits vary from company to company so you will need to check with your broker to confirm coverage.

Unit Contents

Homeowner’s policies exclude coverage for personal contents normally kept at another location. This coverage fills in the gap allowing you to choose how much you wish to insure the belongings in your recreational vehicle for.

HOW TO REDUCE YOUR PREMIUM

Most insurance companies will give you a discount if you combine your home and automobile insurance with your recreational vehicle insurance.

There are also discounts if you have monitored satellite tracking or other types of anti-theft devices.

If your vacation trailer is permanently parked at a campground you might qualify for an additional 5% discount if the campground is secured and supervised.
