Uber Coverage Explained

Uber drivers have some coverage through Uber’s commercial policy with Intact Insurance. Here is how it works.

Uber’s commercial policy with Intact is broken down into three phases. Phase 1 is when an Uber driver is logged into the Uber app and is available to accept passengers. Phase 2 is when you are on the way to pick up your passenger and phase 3 is when you are driving your passenger to their destination.

The coverage varies depending on which phase you are in.

Phase 1: You are Available to Accept a Trip

During this time period Uber’s commercial policy provides $1 million third party liability and standard accident benefits. It also includes comprehensive and collision coverage with a $1,000 deductible as long as you have purchased this coverage on your personal auto policy.

Phase 2&3: You are going to Pick up the Passenger or are Driving them to their Destination

During this time period Uber’s policy provides you with $2 million third party liability and standard accident benefits. It also includes comprehensive and collision coverage with a $1,000 deductible as long as you have purchased this coverage on your personal auto policy.

Does Uber’s Commercial Policy Cover UberEats?

Yes & No. The policy will only provide coverage for those drivers who participate in ridesharing and the delivery of food. Drivers who only deliver food are not covered. It is important that you contact your broker if you are considering driving for UberEats as the standard insurance companies typically do not accept risks with this type of use. You will likely need to change insurance companies.

Do I need to tell my Existing Insurance Company?

Yes.  The Ontario Automobile Application form requires that you disclose to your insurance company whether or not you are using the vehicle to carry passengers or for deliveries, this includes Uber. Failure to inform your insurance company could result in a claim being denied and your policy being cancelled.

Your broker will advise you what information your particular insurance company requires and if there are any restrictions in how many hours you can drive and if there will be any additional charge to your personal auto insurance policy.
